Outdoor Plant Delivery in Manhattan — Terrace Plants, Window Boxes & Seasonal Planters

Outdoor plants in New York City present a unique set of challenges — limited space, variable light, wind exposure on high terraces, and the need for plants that can handle the city's hot summers and cold winters. At Citywide Flower Plants, we've been helping Manhattan residents and building managers choose the right outdoor plants for their spaces since 1995.

We carry seasonal outdoor plants throughout the year — spring bulbs and flowering annuals in April and May, heat-tolerant summer plants through August, and fall mums, ornamental kale, and seasonal planters in September and October. Our selection changes with the season, so call us at (212) 828-3088 to ask what's available today.

Window boxes are one of the most popular requests we get from Upper East Side co-op residents and brownstone owners. A well-planted window box transforms the exterior of any building and is a genuine gift to the neighborhood. We can advise on plant selection for sun or shade exposures, and we deliver throughout Manhattan.

For building entrances and lobby planters, we offer seasonal outdoor arrangements that make a strong first impression. Many of our corporate and residential clients refresh their entrance planters each season. Call (212) 828-3088 to discuss a seasonal planting program for your building.

Buying Guide

Choosing Outdoor Plants for NYC

1

Sun vs. shade exposure

Most NYC terraces and window boxes get either full sun (south- or west-facing) or partial shade (north- or east-facing). Full-sun spots suit geraniums, petunias, marigolds, and lavender. Shaded spots do better with impatiens, begonias, and ferns. Knowing your exposure is the single most important factor in choosing outdoor plants.

2

Wind on high terraces

High-floor terraces in Manhattan can be surprisingly windy, which desiccates plants quickly and can damage tall or fragile stems. Choose compact, sturdy varieties — ornamental grasses, sedums, and low-growing flowering plants handle wind better than tall, leggy annuals.

3

Container size and drainage

Outdoor plants in containers need adequate drainage — a pot without drainage holes will waterlog roots, especially in New York's summer rainstorms. Larger containers hold moisture longer and are more forgiving in heat. Window boxes should be at least 8 inches deep for most flowering plants.

4

Seasonal timing

In NYC, the outdoor planting season runs roughly from mid-April through October. Spring annuals go in after the last frost (typically mid-April). Summer plants peak in June–August. Fall mums and ornamental plants extend the season through October. We can advise on timing for your specific situation.

5

Building and co-op rules

Many Manhattan co-ops and condos have rules about window boxes, terrace plantings, and the weight of containers on terraces. Check with your building management before purchasing large planters. We're happy to advise on lightweight container options and plant selections that comply with typical building restrictions.
